This place evokes cruel, bloody memories from the past. The bones of our ill-fated fellow-men crumble to dust under our feet: on this spot stood the city gallows. Here on this spot though, the executioner's sword struck its mighty blow, beheading condemned men. The last execution took place in , when a man and a woman were condemned to be beheaded because of a murder they committed together. However, at that time, the city hadn't had an executioner for a very long time already; they had to borrow an executioner from Budapest. And the medieval code was quite rigorous: death penalties were imposed upon more than sixty criminal offenses!
This included not only committing or assisting in a murder, robbery, or brigandry, but also included adultery, feticide, charlatanism, blasphemy, and treason. Besides decapitation and hanging, other forms of executions were known as well: torture on the rack, being buried alive, drowning in a sack, and so on. Of course, lighter punishments were inflicted for lesser sins: confinement, imprisonment, pillory, imposing a fine, and so on. In the enlightenment period, things became much more lenient. Balkrishna Hari absconded, and could be found only in January , betrayed by a friend.
Police informants: the Dravid brothers, were eliminated by Vasudeo Hari, Mahadev Vinayak Ranade and Khando Vishnu Sathe, who were arrested in their attempt to shoot police chief constable Rama Pandu later the same evening, of 9 February All were subsequently apprehended and tried.
Sathe, though a juvenile, was sentenced to 10 years' Rigorous Imprisonment. This article states that Deccani is Damodar's last name and refers to him as such. It also terms him an advocate.
