Regardless of the number, these magnificent coloured illustrations of the exotic flora of the West Indies are amongst the earliest published, and are surely the most sumptuous.
When Europeans first arrived in the West Indies the islands were mostly covered by forest. Centuries of cultivation have altered that landscape considerably, but the islands remain rich in exotic native flora. The earliest botanical surveys of the islands were carried out by French and British naturalists, nearly two hundred years after the discovery of the Americas.
These include the work of Plumier , , in the French colonies, and the work of Plukenet , and Sloane , in the British colonies. Their publications are richly and superbly illustrated and depicted plants never before seen by the Europeans.

Dearden and dated Originally issued in 19 parts between and With spectacular plates of exotic birds by Jacques Barraband , "considered among the best bird artists of the time [whose] work for Le Vaillant was the climax of his career" Jackson. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband's engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant's publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation.
Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds' feathers. A splendid complete set of the most celebrated of the Grands Voyages de Circumnavigation. The work covers every aspect of the expedition, including reports on the Zoology, Botany, Anthropology, Geography, and Geology, as well as descriptions of the progress of the voyage itself.
The expedition reached the ice pack in January but failed to penetrate it or get south of the 64th parallel. In , from Tasmania, they returned to the Antarctic region where Adele Land was discovered. An extensive visit was made to New Zealand. Helena' Hill, Pacific Voyages, p Dumont D'Urville had originally planned a voyage whose primary aim was to study the peoples and habitats of the Pacific Islands. The ships had been designed and outfitted for the tropics, and he had no plans to visit the Antarctic. However, at a relatively late stage in the preparations for the expedition, King Louis-Philippe, who had become aware of British plans to despatch James Clark Ross on a voyage to discover the south magnetic pole, commissioned Dumont d'Urville to explore the Antarctic regions for 'the glory of France'.
The title of the work therefore stakes France's claim to this new region of exploration, whilst the contents reflect Dumont d'Urville's original intentions and include a great deal on the tropical regions, peoples, flora and fauna. Bound in contemporary half scarlet morocco, marbled paper boards, gilt extremities quite scuffed. The work contains descriptions of many North American birds, some of which predate those of Alexander Wilson. Vieillot, along with Wilson, was a pioneer in a new kind of ornithology in which birds were no longer assessed as specimens and skins but studied as living organisms within their environment.
Very little is known of the life of this famous ornithologist closely associated with American as well as French birds: in all 26 genera and 32 species of North American bird were originally described by Vieillot, and he gave the Wild Turkey, the Pintail, the Cedar Waxwing, and the Scarlet Tanager their Latin scientific names.
Vieillot emigrated from France to Santo Domingo in but, on the rise of civil unrest there, he moved to the United States in about Six years later, destitute, he returned to Paris and published "Histoire Naturelle des plus beaux oiseaux chanteurs de la Zone Torride" between and and between and studied the expanding exotic bird collection in the Paris Museum.
Vieillot, was overshadowed by Buffon and Georges Frederic Cuvier and rejected by his contemporaries in the field, but his controbution to the ornithology of the New World eventually gained recognition after his death.
