Guadalupe Hernandez Camacho home to family in Mexico. Guadalupe Hernandez Camacho is remembered as a Pescadero resident who would help those around him. More than a decade ago, Ruben Ramirez picked up J. Guadalupe Hernandez Camacho in Watsonville when he was en route from Los Angeles to find work farther north.
It was the start of a friendship that was years in the making. Camacho died in a car crash on May 5 at the age of 63, but the memory of his affable laughter and dedication to loved ones is very much alive.

It was a surprise that he passed away. He traveled between the two countries until it became too difficult to cross the border. He made the Coastside his permanent home. Ramirez remembered whenever someone was sick, Camacho was the one to step up and offer a ride to get help. Saul Armenta met Camacho in the streets of Pescadero and the two started talking. Once, Armenta got the idea to attend English class. Sometimes, Camacho would invite Armenta for a movie night so that Armenta could help him translate, but that might not have been necessary.
His friends said that Camacho loved his job at the farm. On Saturdays, he was responsible for cleaning the tractor.
He started the day early, and would finish by 7 p. He loved soccer and had a collection of jerseys to prove it.
In the field, a group of older farmers would compete with a group of younger ones when it was time to pick Brussels sprouts. Camacho always won, they say. Cruz said that Camacho and her father had been colleagues at the same farm, so he knew her and the rest of her siblings since they were babies. A tree had to be cut back to make room for it. And he did.
Although not bound by blood, he knew many of the kids in the community, Cruz said. When they succeeded, he celebrated their successes.
